Low back pain in pregnancy
While low back pain during pregnancy is common, it can be managed and alleviated through various means, including exercises, physical therapy and postural adjustments among some.
Why low back pain occurs during pregnancy
During pregnancy, it is common for women to experience low back pain. There are several reasons for this discomfort.
Firstly, as the baby grows, the additional weight puts extra strain on the lower back. The expanding uterus also shifts the individual's center of gravity, causing an increased curvature of the spine and placing more pressure on the lower back.
Secondly, hormonal changes during pregnancy, specifically the hormone relaxin, loosen the ligaments in the pelvic area. This can lead to instability and misalignment of the spine and pelvis, contributing to lower back pain.
Check out these three exercises that can alleviate back pain:
1. Pelvic Tilts - Pelvic tilts are effective exercise that can help strengthen the muscles of the lower back, abdomen, and pelvic floor. They promote better posture, alleviate lower back pain, and prepare the body for labor.
2. Hip Flexor Stretch - This is a simple exercise for opening up the anterior (front) part of the hip and can indirectly alleviate pulling and tightness in the front of the thigh, which may be related to tension in the round ligaments.
